All of the runners I coach express that they are surprised after their first race or hit splits in a workout they thought previously impossible. (I am never surprised when they do though.)

This is because most people, before being coached, aren’t training while thinking about the future. They train for the current week or to feel something in the current moment.

Zooming out and understanding when to apply volume vs intensity, and how the training load can remain constant while the two latter mentioned variables can change drastically.
